I recently acquired my mother’s former vehicle for a number of reasons and had researched a place to get a safety inspection done. I thought I had picked a decent place. When they asked the reason for the inspection, I told them my mother had gifted it to me. I dropped off my vehicle and arranged to pick it up at lunch. I got the text report - the vehicle failed with three issues. I had hoped it would pass (it’s only a 2015 and had gone in for every service appointment) but I knew there was always a chance something would pop up. When they then called me, I was told my total for the day was $1100 and change. That surprised me as we had not discussed any work. Only the inspection. I asked for an explanation and if they had done any work to the car other than the inspection and she was unable to provide an answer. She actually just stopped talking and then a man picked up the phone. He started to explain that the car had failed and what that meant. I said I understood, but why was she saying my cost today was $1100? He said that ‘we quote the price for premium parts’. I replied saying we had not discussed doing any work and asked again if they had done any work on it yet. He said no (which was a relief). I was honest and told him I just can’t afford that much money to have it fixed and get it inspected again (within the ten days without paying their $149 inspection fee again). He said ‘you’ve got to understand, I have to feed my family and pay the bills’. His comment left me shocked - I don’t know if he made assumptions about why I was there or why my mother had gifted me the car (the report they had made stated at the top “Reason for Safety: mother just gave to her” which can be read the wrong way). I don’t know if he thought I didn’t have a family and bills of my own, but it didn’t sit well with me. I ended up going elsewhere for a second opinion and final inspection. Edit: In response to the company's reply, I did not state I was having the work done by a friend "in my driveway". I said I knew a mechanic who's opinion I trusted and likely wouldn't cost as much. I went back to my hometown and had an automotive shop my family has gone to for years do a second inspection and the necessary repairs as they have "the equipment and training required to do the job properly and up to the laws standards".
